Insulation and Protection
As winter and the colder weather draws near, it is important that appropriate protection of pipes and tanks is provided. A burst pipe or tank is at best inconvenient and at worse, disruptive and can lead to the loss of personal effects and sentimental items and significant damage.
If a property is to be left empty for a substantial period of time over the winter period then consideration could be given to draining down of water surfaces including the heating system. Some low level electrical heating could be left running but the risk of frozen and burst pipes is significantly reduced.
Radiators in conservatories should also be used with care, particularly if these are turned off. As the space is then unheated, water could freeze and could lead to burst pipes occurring upon thawing or reuse.
